How to Make a Cover for the Veranda or Terrace

The choice and installation of a roof for the terrace is a key step for those who have decided to live the outdoor spaces of their home: terrace, balcony or veranda that is. Roofing of wooden terraces or roofs in glass-aluminum, roofs open-able or fixed terraces, simple awnings or gazebos: The typologies are really many and there are to be reckoned with the numerous existing regulations, including the condominium ones. We understand together what are the key steps to properly choose the roof for our terrace so that it is functional, aesthetically pleasing, well contextualized and… in accordance.

First we evaluate whether the cover for the terrace will have to serve us only in summer or must be 4 seasons.

If we are looking for a cover to live our veranda in summer it will be sufficient to procure a simple but sturdy awning with a possible winding system if we need to isolate the environment from the lighting, the heat and the winds. Awnings as a veranda cover are an excellent solution for ease of personalization in terms of shape, fabric, color and structure material. Moreover, for the lazy, there are awnings with motorized mechanisms of opening and closing.

The new roof for our terrace or veranda as well as allowing us to use these environments even in the sunny season, will have the undoubted advantage of hindering the irradiation of the interior areas of the house, opposite the terrace or the veranda itself, It is an immediate saving on energy consumption. The only advice is to pay attention to safety and durability, avoiding to buy too weak structures.

In addition to the awnings we can use a wooden gazebo or a wrought iron gazebo. Apart from these materials, more suitable for fixed structures, it is possible to find gazebos in steel, aluminum or polyester that guarantee greater lightness and transportability as they are foldable. The roof of the gazebo is usually made up of a waterproof tarpaulin.

Roofing for terrace in wood, iron, glass, aluminum

If we need a cover for the terrace that is suitable also for the winter period we will probably choose a structure less precarious (but still removable), sufficiently sturdy and resistant to atmospheric agents such as wind, rain, snow. There are canopies and covers of this type also telescopic, easily opened thanks to mechanisms of motorization. In addition, the covers can be as transparent verandas and can be thermally insulated and able to attenuate external noises.

Excellent solutions such as roofing are the structures in wood and/or aluminum with retractable canopy, i.e. with the possibility to open and close the roof in the two modes manual or motorized. These structures in the upper part are, optionally, assisted by ventilation gaps, insulating panels, waterproof sheets and decorative covers. They can also be fitted with fixed or removable transparent side panels, which can preserve the exterior view. The wooden roofs can be in laminated wood or solid wood of fir, larch, oak. Other materials are also used to create wrought iron roofs, plexiglass covers and poly-carbonate covers.

Install the Terrace Cover

The installation of roofs for terraces and verandas falls in the present case concerning the implantation of precarious works, that is, removable, on spaces outside the house, which must in no way be finalized for residential use. In order to regulate this case, each municipality and region is endowed with its own regulations. Please refer to your local administrations. Normally, the structures of wood or steel mounted through flanges or bolts are also included in the precarious or removable structures. Particular attention should be paid if the property falls into confined areas such as historical centers. In this case, prior to installing a roof of a terrace, it is necessary to acquire a preventive opinion of the superintendence of cultural and environmental heritage.

In general, however, the coverage of a terrace or veranda is not subject to urban authorization by the municipality and can be carried out immediately after submission of the application, annexed to a report by a technician, together with the payment of an amount of €50.00 per square meter.

In order to avoid litigation, in addition, in the case of verandas or terraces belonging to residential buildings, it is indicated to authorize the execution by the condominium assembly. Remember that, in any case, it is necessary to respect the legal distance between the roof structure and the window or the balcony of the neighbor that, for art. 873 of the Civil Code, must be at least 3 meters.
